Seminar: Neutron imaging in materials research
Neutron imaging for the non-destructive characterization of both materials and components has reached a new level after techniques based on contrast mechanisms alternative to the common beam attenuation have become available. In this way, properties of materials and complex systems can be resolved by position sensitive mapping exploiting diffraction, small-angle scattering and refraction signals. The unique nature of neutron radiation allows for high sensitivity to light elements, high penetration depth in metals and sensitivity to magnetic fields. Applications related to 2D and 3D visualization of material phase heterogeneities, texture, fluid dynamics, magnetic structures and phase transitions in applied materials will be presented.
