The moderator tank is filled with heavy water (D2O), having a height and a diameter of ca. 2.5 metres. It is situated in the reactor pool.

The fuel element is located in the moderator tank within a vertical central channel, which divides the primary cooling circuit using normal water from the heavy water in the external moderator tank.
