What arrangements are requested from German users?

During your stay at FRM II and for participation in scientific experiments monitoring of people involved by the department for radiation protection is required by our authorities. Therefore we need to know the dose received before your arrival at FRM II and have to monitor your radiation exposure during your stay at FRM II.

  • To guarantee a smooth stay you have to take care of the following items prior to your arrival at FRM II:
    • A valid "Strahlenpass" (radiation passport) is necessary. For participation in experiments in the neutron guide hall you have to be a radiological worker Category B (max. 6 mSv/a).
      • Take care that the dose records in the Strahlenpass are not older than three months.
    • You need to bring your own dosimeter, capable of detecting neutrons and gamma radiation.
    • Your home institution needs a valid license according to §15 StrlSchV and an "Abgrenzungsvertrag" (contract with TUM defining responsibilities of radiation protection departments).

Please note in advance:

  • Make sure to take care of this items in due time since this may take a while.
  • If you have any questions contact your own radiation protection officer, who will certainly help you.

After your arrival at FRM II you have to contact the radiation protection office, where you will receive another dosimeter, will participate in a FRM II specific safety training and will receive further information.

After finishing the experiment, please go back to the radiation protection service to check out. You give back the local dosimeter and receive your completed "Strahlenpass" in return.

Please keep in mind that you are always requested to have your dosimeters with you when entering the experimental or neutron guide hall. Details concerning the radiation protection at the FRM II will be presented to you during the training film which you are reqiured to see prior to start any activity at the FRM II.

Note to visiting scientists travelling by plane

If you are concerned of obtaining a dose on your dosimeter during your flight you may consider to ask for a second dosimeter, which you will not wear during your presence in the controlled area. In this way your actual received dose can be calculated from the difference of the dosimeters.

What arrangements are requested from foreign users?

Visiting scientists from foreign countries normally do not have a radiation pass. During your stay at FRM II and for participation in scientific experiments monitoring of the people involved by the department for radiation protection is required by our authorities. Therefore we need to know the dose you received before your arrival at FRM II and have to monitor your radiation exposure during your stay at FRM II. To guarantee a smooth stay you have to take care of the following items prior to your arrival at FRM II:

In case your are a 'radiological worker' - A 'radiological worker' is somebody who is already working in controlled areas in his home institution and whose radiation exposure is monitored.

  • Fill in the form Request for occupational exposure records of radiation history for outside workers. The form can be downloaded from Downloads, look for Forms - Radiation Protection.
  • If possible, please bring your own dosimeter, capable of detecting neutrons and gamma radiation.
  • Provide us with a written declaration of your dose history obtained during the current year. If you do not have this information you need to confirm that you have not received a dose of more than 15 mSv during the current year.

In case you have never before worked in a controlled area and were never monitored for radiation exposure, you have to follow this procedure:

  • Fill in the form Request for occupational exposure records for outside workers. The form can be downloaded from Downloads, look for Forms - Radiation Protection.
  • Provide us with a written declaration from your home affiliation that your received dose during the current year is less than 1 mSv

After your arrival at FRM II you have to contact the radiation protection office, where you will receive dosimeters and participate in a FRM II specific safety training. The required instructions for on site information, working security and radiation protection will be presented to you by a video film. This movie is of course available in an english version.

Please keep in mind that you are always requested to have your dosimeters with you when entering the experimental or neutron guide hall.

After finishing your experimental work you must return the dosimeters to the radiation protection office. The results of the dosimeter evaluation will be send to you local radiation protection service.

Note to visiting scientists travelling by plane

If you are concerned of obtaining a dose on your dosimeter during your flight you may consider asking for a second dosimeter, which you will not wear during your presence in the controlled area. In this way your actual received dose can be calculated from the difference of the dosimeters.

When may I be certain to come across a staff member in the radiation protection office?

The radiation protection office is manned during normal office hours, but you can be certain that a member of radiation protection will be present in the office from

Monday to Friday 8:00 to 16:00

and

Friday 8:00 to 13:00

for your registration and departure procedure.

However, clearance measurements of your activated materials have to be organized separately in advance with the radiation protection.

What have I to know about sample handling and clearance measurements?

Samples which had been positioned in the neutron beam, were activated. Some activation products have very short half-lives, others have half-lives in the order of years. Most problems are caused by cobalt, zinc, iron and silver. If possible, please reduce the amount of these elements.

  • Each sample or tool which has to be removed after your beam time from the experimental hall or the neutron guide hall needs a clearance measurement from radiation protection using gamma-spectrometry.
  • Equipment which was located in the neutron guide hall or in the experimental hall, also have to be checked for activation or contamination by the radiation protection department.
  • You can't immediately take with you samples or tools which maybe activated!
    • In this case, please make arrangements with your local contact: your belongings can be sent to you either by normal mail or as dangerous goods.

Please note:

Please inform the radiation protection department on time of the expected materials to arrange the clearance measurements with you. A gamma-spectrometric measurement of your activated samples may take up to 14 hours. Checking your equipment for contamination and activation take usually less time. However, since we constantly have a large amount of materials to be checked or measured you may have to wait for the measurement up to a few days.
