Primary Collimator

Description

Collimators are used to clean the usable radiation from disturbing scattered incoming radiation. The hardware consists of several absorber foils with a length of l mounted parallely in a distance of d. These foils let only radiation pass through whith a maximum divergence of 2*atan(d/l).
For HEiDi there are three horizontal primary beam collimators integrated in the beam shutter of the reactor. By this, the unwanted scattered radiation becomes removed very early from the primary beam. This reduces the radiation at the monochromator to a minimum.

Hardware

Usually used plastic foils cannot stand the enormous radiation in the primary beam. Aluminum foils are a delicate material due to its ductility. Therefore, the Hahn-Meitner-Institut, Berlin manufactured collimators with steel foils of 25μm thickness after an initial idea of the Instituts für Kristallographie, RWTH Aachen. These foils are coated from both sides with gadolinium paint (total thickness of 75µm per foil). We hope that those foils resist for a much longer time in the beam.

After the successful characterization of the collimators at the single crystal diffractometer SV28 at the FZ Jülich they were mounted into the rotating cylinder of the beam tube shutter of SR-9.in June 2003.
