On Tuesday, 3.10.2023, we will guide you through one of the world’s most modern research neutron sources.
Look at the reactor pool and learn more about the non-destructive investigation of matter with neutrons. There is plenty of information, lectures, films, games, Lego models of scientific instruments and the opportunity to have your own questions answered by our scientists:
- Who is working on the research neutron source FRM II??
- How does such a high-performance research reactor work?
- What is radioactivity and where do we encounter it in everyday life?
- Why are neutrons used for research?
- Why are radioisotopes/radiopharmaceuticals used for cancer therapy?
- Why can bacteria become resistant to antibiotics?
CURIOUS?
Then visit the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum at the research neutron source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) on Tuesday, 3.10.2023. The meeting place this time is Maschinenwesen (Magistrale) der TUM, Boltzmannstr. 15, 85748 Garching near Munich.

For guided tours please register in advance: https://indico.frm2.tum.de/e/Maustag-TdoTuer2023

On the open day there will be guided tours through the research neutron source again. All visitors have to register and it means to be fast and not to come without a valid identity card!
Very important: Please note our access rules:
- Minimum age: 18 years,
- valid identity card or passport, non-EU citizens need a valid passport (residence permits or driving licenses are not accepted),
- no access for pregnant women and nursing mothers,
- no cameras or cell phones allowed (personal items can be left free of charge at our checkroom),
- long pants (covered legs) as well as closed shoes are obligatory (visitors' path leads over gratings for longer distances),
- No completely barrier-free access. Please inform us about your requirements, together we will find a solution!

MEETING POINT : Pförtnerhaus der Forschungs-Neutronenquelle Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II), Lichtenbergstr. 1, 85748 Garching
The mouse is looking forward to seeing you!
...and if you can't wait: here you can find impressions and photos from last year...
In this movie you can see what you can expect at the Mouse Day at FRM II!
Where will we get our energy from in the future? What is a quantum computer? How does Alzheimer's disease develop? And what actually happened after the Big Bang? The researchers of the four Munich Clusters of Excellence e-conversion, MCQST, SyNergy and ORIGINS are dealing with these and many other questions. At the joint booth you can expect exciting experiments to do yourself, lots of information about the clusters and an exciting quiz with great prizes!
- Cluster of Excellence e-conversion
Become an energy expert and find out how wind, water and light can make fans take off. Also use fruits and vegetables and construct your own battery! Find out what else is needed for a battery and test it out right away! Or use the fruit and play the scale up and down. How is that supposed to work? Check us out and find answers to your questions.
In order to use the energy from the sun, wind and water, we need to convert and store it. The e-conversion cluster of excellence is researching the fundamentals of these processes so that both will run more efficiently in the future. In every conversion, a considerable amount of energy is lost at the interface between different materials. The savings potential is enormous and a good reason to bring together the best experts in the e-conversion cluster.
- Cluster of Excellence MCQST, Munich Center for Quantum Science and Technology
Virtual reality (VR) makes it possible: put the goggles on your nose and you're standing in the lab! Thanks to our VR glasses, we take you into a real research lab and you can watch how quantum researchers produce extremely thin crystal layers. These quantum materials consist of only one atomic layer and allow the observation of different quantum effects.
Discover the world of quanta and learn about the research questions on quantum information theory, quantum simulation, quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensors and quantum materials that are being researched in Munich.
- Cluster of Excellence SyNergy
In the Munich Cluster for Systems Neurology (SyNergy), research is being conducted on diseases such as Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis and stroke. Knowledge of how these diseases are interrelated should lead to new therapeutic options.
View through the microscope - objects of investigation from neurological research.
- Cluster of Excellence ORIGINS
What is dark matter? Where do stars and galaxies come from? How did life arise on Earth and is there life elsewhere in the universe? The ORIGINS Cluster with more than 120 research groups from the fields of astrophysics, biophysics and particle physics is investigating these and other questions.
At the ORIGINS booth you can make "fridge magnets" with galaxy pictures to take home.
Selfie Point: Grab a helmet and other gadgets and take a picture right in the tunnel of CERN's famous LHC particle accelerator.
ITM is a leading radiopharmaceutical biotech company developing a new generation of precision radiomolecular therapeutics and diagnostics for difficult-to-treat tumors. More information about our mission and what role medical radioisotopes can play in the treatment of cancer is available at our information booth. As a fast-growing and global company, we are always looking for talented people and will be happy to provide information at our booth on how to join ITM.
