The Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management (iwb) presented on 3rd of July, a new, probably unique in Germany, research plant for the manufacturing of prototype lithium batteries. Background is the start of two, strongly supported by the Federal Government and the Free State of Bavaria battery projects EEBATT and ExZellTUM, which want to explore and develop innovative future energy storage systems. In these two projects, the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz center is involved. Under the coordination of Dr. Ralph Gilles battery components or entire batteries are measured during loading and unloading, to gain completely non-destructive insights from the inner life of the battery during operation.
Rainer Klüting of the Stuttgarter Zeitung provides an interesting background report for the opening of the new research production line for lithium-ion battery cells (in German only).
