On 3.10.2025, we will guide you through one of the world’s most modern research neutron sources.
Look at the reactor pool and learn more about the non-destructive investigation of matter with neutrons. There is plenty of information, lectures, films, games, Lego models of scientific instruments and the opportunity to have your own questions answered by our scientists:
- Who is working on the research neutron source FRM II??
- How does such a high-performance research reactor work?
- What is radioactivity and where do we encounter it in everyday life?
- Why are neutrons used for research?
- Why are radioisotopes/radiopharmaceuticals used for cancer therapy?
- Why can bacteria become resistant to antibiotics?
CURIOUS? Then visit the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum at the research neutron source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) on Tuesday, 3.10.2025. The meeting place this time is TUM School of Engineering and Design, Boltzmannstraße 15, 85748 Garching bei München
Please note that there will be no catering facilities available at the research campus in Garching this year. Please bring your own snacks with you!
How to register for the tours?
The Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum and the Research Neutron Source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) will be offering guided tours on Friday, October 3, 2025, in addition to information stands. There will be guided tours in English.
NOTE: Unfortunately, all places in our children's tours are fully booked for this year. There are still a few places left on the adult tours. Registration is open until noon on 2 October 2025. You are also welcome to visit us at our information stands in the foyer of the TUM Mechanical Engineering building on 3 October 2025!
Please also take a look at our website to find out more about our research work and not to miss upcoming events.

On the Maustag there will be guided tours through the research neutron source again. All visitors have to register and it means to be fast and not to come without a valid identity card!
Very important: Please note our access rules:
- Minimum age: 18 years,
- valid identity card or passport, non-EU citizens need a valid passport (residence permits or driving licenses are not accepted),
- no access for pregnant women and nursing mothers,
- no cameras or cell phones allowed (personal items can be left free of charge at our checkroom),
- long pants as well as closed shoes are obligatory (visitors' path leads over gratings for longer distances),
- Unfortunately we can not provide completely barrier-free access at our Open day.
Meeting place & checkroom
TUM School of Engineering and Design, Boltzmannstraße 15, 85748 Garching near Munich.
On our Maustag, 3 October, we cordially invite you to visit our information stands in the foyer of the TUM School of Engineering and Design. Here you will have the opportunity to gain exciting insights into the world of modern neutron research.
At our information stands you will learn more about the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Research Neutron Source (FRM II) and the associated Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ). Experience how neutrons are used to analyse materials and what scientific breakthroughs can be achieved with them. You can also find out how our research neutron source works and what measures are taken to monitor the environment in order to measure radioactivity. Furthermore, you can find out about the radiation protection measures and tasks of our radiation protection team, which are taken to protect employees and the environment.
In addition, we will introduce you to the world's most intense positron source ‘NEPOMUC’, which is operated at the FRM II. Discover how these exotic particles are produced and which current areas of research deal with the investigation of positrons.
Of course, we also offer our youngest visitors exciting hands-on and information stands:
- Models of scientific instruments (TRISP, ANTARES)
- Model of the fuel element
- Short films
- Neutron throwing game for children
- Cloud chamber - makes natural radiation visible
- Measuring devices for determining radioactivity and exhibits for self-measurement
We look forward to your visit!

Become a scientist in a large-scale research facility! You want to discover the unknown and solve exciting puzzles? Together we will explore these questions
- What are neutrons?
- What does a crystal have to do with a rainbow?
- How do neutrons help research new corona vaccines or drugs?
- Can you eat nitrogen?
In the special children's tour, we will have a closer look at the neutron source and some experiments!
INFORMATION: Unfortunately, all places for our children’s tours are already fully booked for this year. We are very pleased about the great interest and hope to welcome you at a future event.
Please take a look at our website to find out more about our research work and to make sure you don’t miss any upcoming events. Thank you for your understanding!
MEETING POINT : Pförtnerhaus der Forschungs-Neutronenquelle Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II), Lichtenbergstr. 1, 85748 Garching
The mouse is looking forward to seeing you!
...and if you can't wait: here you can find impressions and photos from last year...
In this movie you can see what you can expect at the Mouse Day at FRM II!
ITM is a leading radiopharmaceutical biotech company developing a new generation of precision radiomolecular therapeutics and diagnostics for difficult-to-treat tumors. More information about our mission and what role medical radioisotopes can play in the treatment of cancer is available at our information booth. As a fast-growing and global company, we are always looking for talented people and will be happy to provide information at our booth on how to join ITM.
How are the fuel elements from FRM II safely disposed of? GNS Gesellschaft für Nuklear-Service mbH is the manufacturer of the CASTOR containers used to transport the FRM II fuel elements. You can view a model of the CASTOR-MTR3 at the GNS information stand. GNS employees will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
