Event tip: What makes the positron in matter?

As part of the Café & Kosmos series, Dr. Christoph Hugenschmidt will discuss together with participants how antiparticles produced in laboratory can be used to analyse matter.

From the center of our galaxy, an enormous number of gamma quanta with a characteristic energy is emitted. Most likely, these gamma rays are produced by the annihilation of electrons and their antiparticles the positrons. Researchers discuss different theories to explain the origin of cosmic positron sources. PD Dr. Christoph Hugenschmidt from the Research Neutron Source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) produces positrons in laboratory in order to investigate defects in materials on an atomic scale. The annihilation of positrons with electrons gives information about the type and number of defects in a substance.
