First Instrument from JCNS arrived in Garching

Not even one months after the inauguration of the Jülich Center for Neutron Science JCNS, the first neutron spectrometer arrived on March 15th at the Forschungsneutronenquelle Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) in Garching. After the decision of the Forschungszentrums Jülich to shut down their own neutron source in May 2006 a collaboration contract has been signed between the Technische Universität München and Forschungszentrum Jülich to establish an outstation of the JCNS at the FRM II. Since then, the preparation for the installation of 8 scattering instruments is running on full speed in Jülich as well as in Garching. Today the the first big transport arrived with 2 containers on site in Garching.

As the first of the already existing instruments the neutron spin echo instrument moves to Garching. Already for several weeks modifications of the instruments took place in Jülich in order to meet the local beam geometry. Not only the mechanics has been changed. New correction coils will improve the resolution of the instrument using significant more neutrons at he FRM II. By this even slower movements of atoms and molecules can be detected. The main application of the spectrometer is to study the dynamics of soft matter, i.e. polymers and organic molecules. In this materials the movements on atomic length scales determine their physical properties.
