Cryomagnets are used for basic research in the field of magnetism. They help investigating magnetic effects in hard matter, for example in materials of the IT- and nanotechnology.
The JCNS' superconducting cryomagnet is asymmetrical and therefore also useable in the scope of polarisation analysis. A very special feature is the active shielding. In the centre the cryostat has a magnetic field of 5 Tesla, this tallies with 50 000 Gauss. Just one metre apart it is only 1 Gauss, what corresponds to the average magnetic field of the Earth. Thus it can be ensured that neighbouring instruments won't be influenced or hindered in their measurements.
