Workshop: Neutron scattering for crystallographers

Aktuell, Wissenschaft | 18.10.2011

More than a dozen scientists participated at a neutron scattering workshop on the occasion of the joint meeting of the German Crystallographic Society (DGK) and the German and Austrian Mineralogical Societies (DMG, ÖMG).

The neutron workshop was held at the natural science building of the University Salzburg.

Dr. Martin Meven of the FRM II had organized this workshop including a tour of the FRM II.

The Workshop "Neutron scattering for crystallographers" took place one day before the conference on September 19th. "The great interest in neutron scattering was reflected by the broad spectrum of participants from the PhD student to the university professor", says Dr. Martin Meven, who is spokesman of the DGK group "Neutron scattering".

The 15 participants from ten different universities listened to talks from Dr. Ralph Gilles (TUM), Dr. Astrid Schneidewind (HZB), Prof. Dr. Markus Braden (Uni Köln), Prof. i.R. Dr. Fritz Frey (LMU), Dr. Regine Willumeit (HZG) and Dr. Martin Meven (TUM) on the first day. The methods presented were powder and single crystal diffraction, spectroscopy and small angle scattering, whose broad applications were demonstrated by examples from materials science and biology

The next day, the participants visited the FRM II to see the instruments related to the presented methods.

DGK annual meeting 2012:

The annual meeting 2012 of the German Crystallographic Society (DGK) will take place in Munich, March 12-15th (Website of the DGK-meeting). The deadline for proposals for the meeting is December 1st 2011. A workshop for neutron scattering is planned for March 16th.
