Technical defect causes fire in server room

31.01.2021

A fire in an office building section of the Neutron Guide Hall East, on the premises of the Research Neutron Source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) in Garching was reported early on Sunday morning (31.01.21 at 5:44 am).

The TUM fire brigade, which was automatically alerted, found that an air conditioning unit had caught fire in a server room, probably due to a technical defect. The affected part of the building is a conventional office wing.

The fire was extinguished by the TUM fire brigade with the help of two hand-held fire extinguishers. There was no personal injury and only minor damage to property.

The volunteer fire brigade from Garching with several vehicles, an ambulance and the police were also on site as planned. Support was also provided by various call services of the FRM II and the Forschungszentrum Jülich.

At no time were safety facilities of the FRM II affected or the release of radioactivity a concern. All safety equipment functioned as designed.
