The interest of science, medicine and industry in the research neutron source is so large, as the increasing number of research applications impressively proves, that the FRM II is bursting at the seams. Staff and scientists have to switch to container castles. Therefore, the cooperation partners of the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Center (TU München, Research Center Jülich, Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht) have decided to build a new workshop and a new science building. They also provide the necessary finances. Currently old laboratory buildings have to give way to these new buildings and a walk-channel supply of electricity, water, heating and data transmission of these new buildings is erected.
At the end of August the SZ brought a report on all construction sites on the campus Garching. However, as cheap as the new building on the site of the neutron source is portrayed, it will unfortunately not be. The demolition of the old building requires about € 1.8 million. For that, the excavators now came into action. If demolition and supply channel are completed, the construction of two new buildings can start. They will cost of about € 27.5 million in total. Scientists and technicians will hopefully be able to move into the new building in 2018.
The construction costs of the media channel are limited to a maximum of € 3.7 million, but will with high probability not fully utilized. Its completion is scheduled for 2015.
