The founding is within the "Integrated Infrastructure Initiative for Neutron Scattering and Muon Spectroscopy" (NMI3), which combines 23 partners in 14 countries. Beside the neutron source in Garching ten other European neutron and myon research centres participate.
Most of the funding provides free access for European scientists at the FRM II. 35 percent of the total beam time in Garching is used by European researchers to perform their experiments with neutrons.
About half a million Euros are reserved for new projects. For example new mirrors for neutron guides are constructed by the Technische Universität München.
