Internships and Student jobs

The neutron source offers jobs for students, for example internships, as well as bachelor or master theses and student trainee jobs.

Within these jobs computer simulations are performed, components of neutron instruments are tested, software is developed, new methods and concepts of instruments are tested and performed, experiments are designed and scientific measurements are performed. This is especially interesting for students of the following courses: Electrical Engineering, Physics, Engineering, Technical Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Scientific Computing, Mechatronics, Medical Engineering or Precision Engineering.

Included is the opportunity to experience research life and work in an interdisciplinary environment with scientists and engineers. We place special emphasis on the training aspect.

Open positions internships & student jobs

  • Werkstudent/in Surface Optimization and Coating of Uranium Silicide Fuel Samples The research working group "High Density Nuclear Fuels" at the FRM II is at the forefront of studying high-density nuclear fuels for conversion of research reactors. The most promising candidate LEU fuels for conversion of research reactors are metallic uranium-molybdenum alloy fuel (U-Mo) and high-density uranium silicide (U3Si2), both utilizing aluminum-based cladding. This project focuses on preparing uranium silicide fuel samples for future irradiation experiments. Uranium silicide is a brittle material that fractures easily under minimal force, necessitating careful handling and precise preparation. Download

  • Werkstudent/in Post-irradiation examination The research working group "High Density Nuclear Fuels" at the FRM II is at the forefront of studying high-density nuclear fuels for conversion of research reactors. Previous test irradiations of the fuel candidate U-Mo/Al revealed unsatisfactory performance, primarily due to the growth of an interdiffusion layer (IDL) between U-Mo and Al, as it causes volume expansion and other unfavorable irradiation behavior. To address this issue, U-Mo/Al fuel samples with selected diffusion barrier coatings have been prepared and shipped to Argonne National Laboratory (US) for ion irradiation tests, which can effectively simulate in-reactor irradiation at a significantly lower cost. Download

  • Werkstudent/in (m/w/d) Inert Coating U-Mo The research working group "High Density Nuclear Fuels" at the FRM II is at the forefront of studying high-density nuclear fuels for conversion of research reactors. Swift ion irradiation is a time- and cost-effective method for studying uranium-molybdenum (U-Mo) fuel behavior under in-pile conditions. However, U-Mo is highly prone to oxidation, especially at elevated temperatures e.g. during ion irradiation, leading to the growth of irregular oxide layers that affect ion penetration and complicate characterizations during the post-irradiation examination. To address this challenge, we aim to develop a thin inert coating to protect U-Mo samples during ion irradiation. Download

Download

  • Praktikum, Praxissemester im Bereich Scientific Computing In the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum Garching (MLZ), neutron beams from the research reactor FRM II are used to investigate structure and dynamics of materials. We operate highly specialized diffractometers and and spectrometers. Staff and guest researchers from all over the world conduct experiments. Download

• Internship - Practical Semester - B.Sc. Thesis Physical Engineering - Electronic Engineering Our facility is home to NEPOMUC, the world’s most intense cold antimatter beam and a unique probe for material defect studies, surface investigation and fundamental research in quantum physics. As an applicant you will be tasked with supporting the NEPOMUC team in the ongoing effort to completely overhaul the existing voltage-controlled B-amplifier-type PSUs and turn them into current-controlled switching power supplies while maintaining as much as the original hardware as possible. Download

  • Internship - Practical Semester - B.Sc. Thesis Physical Engineering - Computer Science - Electronic Engineering Our facility is home to NEPOMUC, the world’s most intense cold antimatter beam and a unique tool for material defect studies, surface investigation and fundamental research in quantum physics. As applications of the beam have expanded, NEPOMUC’s complexity has increased accordingly. High uptime, efficient beam optimization and quick debug of faults in a system of this complexity requires a stable and redundant control software with rigorous error handling. This requirement has prompted the overhaul of the previous beam control software and the development of a new control/diagnostic system based on resident C++ daemons running on Linux servers. Your task will be that of aiding the deployment of the new control system in collaboration with the NEPOMUC team. Download

  • Internship - Practical Semester - B.Sc. Thesis - Any Curriculum Our facility is home to NEPOMUC, the world’s most intense antimatter beam and a unique tool for material defect studies, surface investigation and fundamental research in quantum physics. We seek and train students willing to develop their knowledge and skills over the widest set of disciplines. If you are a top student from any course of studies who holds a personal interest in gaining a deeper knowledge in any field related to Physics, Electronics or Informatics, and in particular if your career plan would not traditionally offer you the opportunity to do so, we invite you to contact us to compare your desires with our needs.
