As a historic building, the outer shell of the Egg will stay untouched, only the interiors will be removed step by step. "We check every single piece for radioactivity", says Dr. Anton Kastenmüller, Technical Director of the FRM II. The fuel elements were removed in 2002 and disposed.
Kastenmüller assumes costs of several million Euros and a duration of the dismanteling from 10 to 15 years. Afterwards, the building will be used as a laboratory, for storage or even as prolongation of the existing neutron guide hall west.
