The Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BfE) granted the transport approval certificate for the transport and storage cask CASTOR® MTR3 on 17 January 2019. The cask has been specifically designed by GNS Gesellschaft für Nuklear-Service mbH for spent fuel elements from research reactors.
The cask will initially be used for the transport and storage of spent fuel elements from the research neutron source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) of the Technical University of Munich. It will also be able to accommodate different types of fuel elements from other research reactors (such as TRIGA, MTR) using individually customized fuel baskets. The Castor MTR3 measures 160 cm in height and weighs 16 tons.
The transport approval certificate is granted in accordance with the internationally valid regulations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the safe transport of radioactive materials.
